Mindfulness and Meditation
Imagine a mind free from all worries, one that is peaceful, calm and focused.. such are the benefits of a mind that is mindful, achieved through meditative practice.
Anne Rowbottom is our expert in Buddhist Meditation, and we have the pleasure of receiving some of her practical wisdom for living on the Simply Changing Diploma in Coaching, where we discuss the benefits of mindfulness in coaching and daily life, and practice some group meditations, which includes creating a peaceful inner core, a walking meditation, and eating some lovely chocolates and fruit (in a mindful way of course!!).
Here’s Anne’s story..
“I first came across meditation in the 1960’s but it wasn’t until 2000 that I began to practice seriously. In the late 1990’s there was a lot of speculation about how the new millennium would change our lives, too often this threatened disaster. Although I didn’t pay it much attention my life was soon to change dramatically. At the time I was a university lecturer teaching culture and communication. However, in January 2000 I went down with flu, which resulted in chronic fatigue (also known as ME).
When ME arrived in my life I started to meditate regularly, first using healing visualizations and then through Mindfulness Meditation.
Put simply, mindfulness means being present in the moment in a non-judgmental way and meditation is the method of learning how to acquire this skill. Since my days as a university lecturer, I have being using meditation to explore a whole new way of ‘being in the world’. As part of this exploration I have taken courses and been on retreats, mostly at the Samye Ling Monastry in Eskdalemuir, Scotland, including a year’s training course to teach mindfulness meditation. As a result, I now think of ME not as the disaster it seemed initially, but as a crossroad that led me in a new direction – I am now living a life I love! I look forward to hopefully meeting you and sharing my knowledge.”
